“Higher Ground” is the latest single from Alternate Jane, a doctor-musician from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, who returned to the music scene after a hiatus attending to Covid-19 related duties and subsequently battling Covid-19 herself. This single showcases her multi-instrumentalist skills, playing the acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, midi and synthesizer, as well as a little hand percussion. Alternate Jane collaborated with Melvin Rijlaarsdam (Optoproductions) from the Netherlands to produce the single. The song has a noir theme with a romantic twist, making it a unique listening experience for Valentine’s week.

The song is about feeling alive again after a surprise turn of events in life giving new purpose to one’s life, and a chance meeting of someone you never thought you’d encounter who changes your whole perspective on things. The music video shows the main character not realizing the true nature of the female protagonist’s job, and he has to decide whether he can accept it and proceed with a potential relationship with her.

Alternate Jane’s influences range from Garbage, Michelle Branch, Sixpence None the Richer, Elliott Smith, Evanescence, Paramore, Muse, Linkin Park, Nirvana, and Alicia Keys. She has played on Malaysian radio station Hitz.fm’s Malaysian English Top (MET) 10 segment with an interview by DJ Basil.

“Higher Ground” is a worldwide collaboration from the Netherlands to Malaysia. Alternate Jane’s rejection from various local record labels due to not having a prominent fanbase yet inspired her to become a DIY indie artist, giving her the creative freedom to do things herself.
