The release of the reissue of the debut album “Curves” by the Dimitris Kakavoulis Quartet is a testament to the musical genius of this Athens-based band. The fusion of sounds and influences is incredible, drawing from various musical traditions, including mid-to-late 20th century African American idioms.

The quartet’s style is paradoxical, rendering through their sound, which can be studied in the Western and European sense via music notation and theory, but also perceived as an oral tradition via African culture. The album captures the band’s unique means of expression through original compositions, and the chemistry between the band members is palpable, having worked together on various projects before.

The recording session, which took place over a decade ago, was initially intended to record a demo to book live performances. However, the chemistry and vibe were so amazing that it was decided to turn the experience into a self-produced and self-funded CD, with the cover art based on photographs by Fotini Romaliadou. The album includes 7 of the 8 tracks recorded during the six-hour session, with no commercial direction or involvement from a record label or producer.

Despite the band not booking too many shows after the release and other contributing factors, the reissue of “Curves” is a meeting point between two separate entities, the artist and the Thinkbabymusic Collective label. The release marks the beginning of a new collaboration that will serve as the springboard towards new projects of similar and diverse productions in the near future.

Overall, “Curves” is a must-listen album for anyone who appreciates the beauty and complexity of music. The quartet’s musical genius shines through, and the album captures the essence of their unique means of expression.
