Born in 1955, Joachim Zoepf is a multi-instrumentalist and music teacher who started learning the piano at the age of nine and the saxophone in 1976. After music studies in Vienna and Cologne, he became a freelance musician in 1983, performing in a variety of formations from jazz to new music. His current work focuses on new improvised music and electro-acoustic music.

Geschmacksarbeit is Joachim Zoepf’s latest album and the result of three years of work. Zoepf not only performs on the soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, but also on the bass clarinet and the piano. In addition, he developed the interface and software used in the album.

The album comprises of pieces that are simultaneously performed on woodwinds and computer interface, without any overdubs. This ambitious project required a considerable amount of effort from Zoepf, who commented: “Playing two instruments at the same time at a usable level is not child’s play. Nevertheless, I can continue to use the developed interface and software for other video and electroacoustic projects.”

The music on this album is both melodic and experimental, combining elements of jazz, classical, and electronic music. The result is an intriguing and captivating soundscape that is sure to delight and surprise listeners.

Joachim Zoepf is not only a talented musician but also a cultural activist. He has been involved in numerous initiatives such as the “Initiative Kölner Jazzhaus” and the “Initiativkreis Freie Musik” in Cologne, and is the co-founder of the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Improvisierte Musik”. He also organized the “Improvisatorium” and the series “Leitkultur”, among other projects.
