Offseeds, an experimental ambient music project from Berlin, released “Tales of Extinction” in 2022. The album is a tribute to extinct species, where the band singles out certain species, imagining their existence, evolution, worlds and translating them musically. In atmospheric sounds, the album presents a musical duality in which musique concrète collides with free improvisation. By integrating minimal patterns, ostinatos and impulses into imaginary soundscapes, unique timbres are created.
The album’s tracks alternate between calm sonic planes and sudden cacophony or throbbing sub-bass and dry vocals, projecting listeners through time and space. It creates a cinematic sensibility by including recognizable nature sound samples into the music, telling stories that are both surprising, impressionistic and apocalyptic.
Offseeds’ members are Bilgehan Ozis, Samuel Hall, Adam Goodwin, Josefine Lukschy, and Grit Schuster. They aim to take nature and its previous inhabitants as inspiration, as sources of knowledge, and communicate their stories together with live visuals.
“Tales of Extinction” presents interpretations of now-gone species through sounds, music, voice, and live visuals. The first track, “Mammut,” portrays the Mammut being gracious and wise, trying to communicate on a specific vibration. The album’s overall sound and concept offer a unique and thought-provoking experience, encouraging listeners to consider the impacts of human actions on the environment and its inhabitants.
