Denver-based duo Shady Oaks reemerges into the music scene with the latest single “Best Thing,” a sonic counterpart of their album MAD released in 2022.

Within a year, the band has taken on the storm of emotions that colored their previous work and come out on the other side, finding a moment of introspection and calm in the storm. “Best Thing” is more than simply a song; rather, it is an excursion through the leftovers of bygone rage, a plunge into the peaks and valleys of both memory and emotion. Thomas Rutherford’s writing, taken from 303 Magazine, captures the spirit of music with poetic accuracy: “It’s a catharsis, the thunderstorm finally breaking over a landscape steeped in reminiscence.

Where some of their songs may be considered both a blistering lament of long-held grievances and a serious embrace of reminiscence, at other times their sound has been likened to the snap of thunder on a whiskey glass across a rain-soaked bar. This EP was newly recorded live at Mighty Fine Productions and then mastered at Evergroove Studio, presenting all the dynamic diversities of the band.

From Ty Gallaway’s emotive vocals and guitar to the rich layers added by Isaac Vance’s guitar riffs, Jonah Samp’s powerful drumming, and Hunter Bates’ deep bass lines with flourishes from Sarah Hubbard’s haunting violin, Ian Arras’ keys, and Loren Dorland’s backing vocals, “Best Thing” is going to set a new bar for a dynamic soundscape. “More so than any of Shady Oaks’ musical evolution, ‘Best Thing’ truly epitomizes a band that knows how to focus their high-intensity, live performance onto something that expands beyond the testimonies of anger and angst.

Because if there is one thing that will go on to be unchangingly constant as they grow, then it is that the music of the Shady Oaks will always sound raw and resounding—the kind that evokes in one the very essence of experiences. On “Best Thing,” they promise to take listeners soul searching and on a musical ride that is electrifyingly soulful.
