London-based indie artist Emily Storm has recently released her latest single “Misunderstood,” much to the delight of her many loyal fans. This song philosophizes over the universal things one might feel when misunderstood via unique blends of electronic, folk, and alt-rock genres.

From the vibrant music scene of South West London was born Storm. She first grabbed hold of a guitar, a passion to find music and penning lyrics at the tender age of 10 years. From this day, there has been a path followed in which a sharp edge can be refined into eclectic sonic soundscapes that really feel like her diverse musical influences finally have time upon this earth.

Bridging her pastel aesthetic and love for ‘80s music and fashion, you can’t help but feel like Storm’s music is just that—singing not only to your ears but also to your eyes. Indeed, busking and playing small gigs live have all added to her being a very confident stage performer. From her beautiful, heartfelt lyrics to the commanding power in her voice, there is a strong sense of one who feels exactly what needs to be expressed, making the audience believe her.

“Misunderstood” came from personal experience, dealing with the struggles Storm had from feeling misunderstood. The track, actually finished a year ago, saw the light of day finally as Storm felt that many people relate with this message. As the artist puts it, the song spans from “emotions/situations [that] are pretty universal,” which is most likely the very reason why countless listeners may probably find some kind of reflection in this track.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Emily to discuss her musical journey, the inspiration behind her new single, and her plans for the future.

Q: Emily, what inspired you to pursue music, and how did you start?
A: Since I was little, I’ve always been immersed in music. I started performing solo “concerts” for my parents and got my first guitar at age 10. Watching an older student perform her own composition sparked something in me. I wanted to express myself in that way too. So, I began teaching myself guitar and eventually started writing my own songs. It’s been a journey of self-discovery and expression ever since.

Q: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music before?
A: I’d say it’s a blend of indie ambient and electronic, but it often veers into alt-rock territory depending on the track. My goal is to create eclectic sonic soundscapes that reflect a wide range of emotions and stories. It’s always evolving as I explore new genres and techniques.

Q: Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single, “Misunderstood”?
A: “Misunderstood” was born out of my experiences at university, dealing with failed friendships and relationships. It’s about the frustration and desperation from both the patient and professional perspective, echoing the challenges of meeting new people and being in close quarters. The song reflects replaying old conversations and wishing you’d responded differently. Its repetitive nature aims to evoke the feeling of being driven slightly crazy, which I felt tied everything together effectively.

Q: What’s your creative process like?
A: My process varies, but it often starts with experimenting on my guitar or piano, playing around with different tunings or chord progressions. I focus on creating a vocal melody and chord progression first, with placeholder lyrics that I finalize later. When I work on something more electronic, I build up synth parts within a DAW and then add the vocals, layering and experimenting until it feels complete.

Q: How do you plan to engage your fans and audience moving forward?
A: I’m looking to create more visual content to accompany my music. The DIY music video for “Misunderstood” was a fun way to convey the song’s message, and I think visual storytelling is a powerful tool. I also have more music in the works, which I hope will keep my audience excited and engaged.

Q: Speaking of the future, what can we expect from you? Any upcoming projects or releases?
A: I have an EP in the works that’s set to come out later this year. It’s a bit of a departure from my electronic releases, diving into alt-rock and Evanescence-inspired tracks. This genre really showcases my vocal abilities, and I’m excited to explore this new direction. It’s all about finding the right balance and creating music that’s true to me.

Q: Did you collaborate with anyone on “Misunderstood”? How do you feel about collaboration in your music?
A: I worked on this project alone, which was a challenge but also a rewarding experience. I’ve learned a lot from past collaborations, and I applied those lessons to this project. Although it was daunting, it allowed me to fully realize my vision for the song.

Q: Your music often touches on personal and universal themes. Is there a particular message you hope listeners will take away from “Misunderstood”?
A: With “Misunderstood,” I wanted to highlight the experiences of young women dealing with gaslighting and being made to feel small. It’s about seeing through the lies and trusting your own judgment. I hope listeners find a sense of empowerment and validation in the song, knowing they’re not alone in these feelings.

Emily Storm continues to carve her path in the indie music scene with her authentic voice and innovative sound. “Misunderstood” is not just a song; it’s a testament to her growth as an artist and her commitment to connecting with listeners on a deeper level. Keep an eye on Emily Storm as she navigates the stormy yet exhilarating waters of music, leaving a trail of resonant, heartfelt tracks in her wake.
