Philadelphia native La’Monte has become somewhat of a beacon light for musical innovation, captivating his audience with his neo-soul melodies and organic hip-hop flows.

On his debut EP “What I Came For,” La’Monte offers the listener an invitation to groove-driven, funky soul soundscapes, with songwriting that is equal parts inspiring and pointed, tying the genre together with inspired, low-key trap elements. Drawing from the musical inspiration that spans far and wide, from the rhythmic genius of the Neptunes and Tyler the Creator, with a throwback to the soulful depths that Curtis Mayfield and Bob Marley, La’Monte still manages to synthesize a sound that can only be described as quite transmogrifying.

Such a fusion of such multifarious influences into one coherent whole gave rise to a brand new form of indie-pop, one which La’Monte is proud to term as a journey of “his soul to our ears”. “What I Came For” is more than an EP; it’s an odyssey through life’s trials and triumphs. Self-recorded at Greenhouse Studios in Keyport, New Jersey, the project is with a fellow Philadelphian artist, Mizzymare. It delves through a journey of life’s experiences and emotions, which one just can’t help but feel right along with.

From the alluring room of “Afterparty” to the down-to-earth emotional unpacking of “Rage/Therapy,” every single track plays out like another chapter in this one-man show of La’Monte.

Most intriguing, however, may be La’Monte’s method—a nightly drive to a hidden diner—a ritual now as much a part of his music as his instruments. This eccentric way of finding inspiration actually reflects the commitment of La’Monte to making authentic and emotionally sincere music.

La’Monte’s journey is from struggles of playing instruments on the hard streets of Philadelphia to making an EP that is deeply personal, and the ethos is doused with being true to oneself even amidst adversities. His music epitomizes the very power that defines art in its expression in life’s complexities. “These Dreams” and “Trophies” find La’Monte delving into a naively bright outlook and resilience, respectively, giving listeners a glimpse of the things he wishes for and life’s lessons from hard times.

His music reminds one of those words which were his: “Just because you pour syrup on stuff does not make it pancakes,” meaning the real substance of things does not change. This pointed out how much of a connoisseur he was in his art and not only in his life. As La’Monte continues to pioneer new ways and rises with his music, “What I Came For” is a dare to open the doors that lead to more soul-bearing music to come.

In this world, where superficiality quite often rules, along with the tendencies of ephemerality and futility, soulful and real music from La’Monte is breathtakingly—inspiring and purveyed. Join La’Monte to get lost in the masterpiece that he’s created with “What I Came For.” The debut EP is an invitation more than it is simply a few tracks str tied together and released into the world.
