San Francisco-based artist Said Sara has unleashed their latest dark pop/alt folk anthem titled “Same,” captivating listeners with its evocative storytelling and infectious melodies. Led by multi-talented musician David Benson, the song takes us through a whirlwind of emotions, traversing both open fields and dark tunnels. With influences ranging from Peter Murphy to Cat Stevens, Said Sara crafts a unique sonic landscape that leaves a lasting impression.

Recorded at The Guest Room and Yosemite Studios in San Francisco, “Same” showcases the musical prowess of David Benson, who handles vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo, and piano throughout the track. The song was masterfully polished by Jesse Nichols at The Atomic Garden West in Oakland, California, adding an extra layer of depth to the production.

As the song took shape, David found himself drawing inspiration from various sources. Having recently rearranged songs by Belly and Sinead O’Connor for a solo acoustic performance, he was motivated to create something deeply personal. Additionally, his involvement with the death metal/crust punk band Acephalix influenced the emotional intensity present in Said Sara’s music. Although the musical styles may differ, the raw emotionality remains a common thread.

With “Same,” Said Sara delves into themes of longing, emotional concealment, and heartache. The lyrics explore the complexities of human suffering, drawing on the artist’s experiences as an inner-city high school teacher. Vocal images of witches, warriors, and goddesses intermingle, representing tragic affection and the acceptance of mortality.

A notable aspect of Said Sara’s sound is the prominent use of backwards reverb, which has become somewhat of an obsession for David. This effect adds urgency and serves as a seamless transition between sections of the song. In “Same,” the name Joan (as in Joan of Arc) is washed in reverb and played backward, leading up to the soaring bridge, creating a sonic climax that demands attention.

With Jesse Nichols as the mastering engineer at Atomic Garden Studios, Said Sara’s music finds its final form. David’s isolatory process of writing and recording is expertly captured and enhanced by Jesse, who brings out the fervor and intensity that lies within the music.

“Same” marks another powerful release from Said Sara, showcasing their commitment to crafting emotionally charged and sonically captivating music. Drawing from influences in dark pop, alt folk, and more, Said Sara continues to carve out their own unique path in the music industry. As listeners immerse themselves in the haunting melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, they will undoubtedly be captivated by the enchanting world of Said Sara.
