Los Angeles’s Eddie Cohn, the maestro of a moving lyrical palette with a range of sounds, returns to bring us his new single, “Wave Goodbye.” Riding warm critical success from last year’s debut single, Cohn dives even further into his study of the dynamic rock landscape, looking towards influences that range from the vocal stylings of The Pixies and Alice in Chains all the way to the grandeur of U2 and INXS. “Wave Goodbye” proves even further the evidence of Cohn’s ever-adaptable sound, proving to pull on the heartstrings of the listener with personal stories that easily blend into the music of any genre.

“Wave Goodbye” was recorded in the very beating heart of Los Angeles with a group of the best and most famous musicians from the city coming together in their respective talents for this collaborative Cohn effort. Bringing their drum and bass chops to the track are the able hands of Jake Reed and Dan Lutz, both longtime cohorts of Cohn’s. Further electric guitar riffs are added by Brett Farkas, adding more contemporary edge to the song.

That does nothing to add to the timelessness of the number, where Phil Peterson was added on cello, with Cohn’s own control of vocals, acoustic guitar, synth, piano, and percussion. The sound production under the watch of Kevin Penner shows Cohn’s keen eye for the finer points in music production. With a depth of the lyrics and diversity of the instruments, Wave Goodbye could easily be influenced by any number of music legends.

Cohn brings his ambition to the fore in vocal harmonies that nod to his rock and vocal heroes, giving a truly intriguing layer to the song as it tumbles through its paces, offering a truly immersive listen that tips its hat toward tantalizing vocal harmonies à la the work of The Pixies or INXS. “Wave Goodbye” was far more than the solitary release; rather, a reflection of personal progress for a person and probably even time as a construct. Inspired by so many of the great milestones along this road, the song really turns inward with the question: do these things change us or help define our core essence?

It’s sort of like a musical journey of saying goodbye to the people, selves, and habits of yesterday—leaving those that don’t reflect value any longer to the ultimate in self-improvement and authenticity. Eddie Cohn’s perseverance to bring to life “Wave Goodbye” was a dedicated creative process, filled with both patience and spontaneity.

Echoing the words of Tom Petty, “Most things I worry about never happen anyway,” the latest single by Cohn is an embodiment of the philosophy of less-worried life with openness, empathy, and curiosity. “Wave Goodbye” will be an exciting listen as Eddie Cohn moves into new territory with his 2024 upcoming releases, and a big highlight on artistic growth and personal introspection. Laced with elements of rock and a message any listener can tap into, Cohn is well-placed to massively impact the musical space this year and beyond.
