Outside is written in empathy with helplessness and vulnerability, and with empathy towards those whose mental condition is surrounded by silence or shame. The song describes a state of mind where the thoughts run in circle, and you need something or something to help you silence the voices in your head. The piano repeating a 3/3/2 rhythm, with the layers of the voice obsessively repeating the same cry for help, creates this claustrophobic atmosphere; only relieved by the refrain, that opens a door to light and another peaceful world.

This song is inspired by Hardcore, drum&bass and Jungle raves from the early to late 90’s. That era of dance culture really inspires me to build off of what the pioneers of that genre started. It hurts sometimes now watching dance culture die and I aim to bring it back in full. Artists such as Pink Pantheress, FLO, Yeek and Piri have helped to restart this movement and I know I can stand with great artists such as themselves. Additionally, the lyrics and subject matter of this song are very near to me as the address the growing pains I’ve been experiencing over the past few years and the nostalgic yearning I can’t seem to shake.

I believe anger can be motivational, in small quantities. Often times, after my most recent breakup, I HAD to chose anger over sadness in order to just keep moving forward. The lyrics talk about the depression aspect of the breakup as well as choosing to find solace in anger by looking at instances of my partner’s straight-up tomfoolery. I wanted to create something that made light and poppy out of a really dark experience.

I write all my songs from life experiences, I don’t like to make things up just because it would make a better line. this song is about from my time at a very prestigious catholic school, upper middle class to rich people type of thing. I didn’t come from much, so it was a bit more stressful to make friends, because kids are assholes.. it wasn’t long before everyone knew that I was “the poor kid” and that really stuck, I haven’t seen anyone from that school in years and they still have that perception of me in their minds. I almost always write before I record, especially with songs like this, and once I recorded my verse and the hook I knew I needed another voice, it couldn’t be a solo song. so after sending it to a couple people with no response, I sent it to my homie Jayden (SI0NE) and the rest is history.

Once again, love is the theme of this song. A relationship between two girls has finished. However, the point of this song is the respect for the other person and respect to the moments lived together. “If you don’t want me anymore, I’ve come today to pick up all my memories”. Cecilia Lara, as the writer of the song, is glad for all those memories shared and she is not concerned about braking up. It is not a sad song. She is glad and happy for this beautiful story that has gone away.
“Explained” tell us everything without saying anything: it warms us up without even touching us.
By listening to this piano solo we are able both to follow the harmonic and melodic steps with meticulous attention, and to distract ourselves in our deepest thoughts.
Amberscent wants to show us that some things are not entirely explainable through words, but they can be explained only when we can feel them.
She refers to those moments when we feel something that we first describe in the universal language of emotions, in order to be able to put them into words.
Following this path, in the third single Amberscent chooses to play the flow of her embryonal thoughts by bringing us into the place the song was recorded, and in the exact moment the song was performed: besides the mesmerizing ambience, the piano keys together with their very distinguishable mechanics, we get to listen to her breath, before arriving at an answer that is only shyly revealed by her improvised humming.
This way Amberscent shows how words explain things in such a direct and precise way that they are somehow forced to sacrifice something; and those sounds instead, however vague they may be, can always carry within them all the meaning of what we are talking about.
What “Explained” tells us is something that surely can be heard but can not be spoken: this is the kind of silence that Amberscent would never do without as a composer.

This song represents a growing process, showing a melancholic, helpless vibe at the beginning, slowly changing throughout the song to a more motivating, energetic setting.
I wrote this song when I was just finishing my apprenticeship. Even though I was still struggling with depression at that time, the fact that I was almost “free” and so close to having the opportunity to do whatever I want, motivated me very much and helped me to drag myself out of this mental hole. I guess that’s exactly how to describe this piece. The rise out of a deep dark hole and the gained strength, once you got “over it”! 🙂
